Natural Stress Relief
by Mike Karowski, author of ‘Perfectly Panic Free’

Are your panicky moments becoming your constant work companions? Fight anxiety attacks before they overwhelm you. Try these natural stress relief techniques.

Aside from the tried-and-tested meditation and deep-breathing exercises, here are ways how you can prevent, reduce, and cope with emotional stress.

One of the best stress-avoidance strategies is to find ways to minimize putting yourself in stressful situations. You can achieve this simply by learning how to say no. Accept only the tasks and responsibilities that you can efficiently handle. In addition, avoid talking about topics that upset you. Some people get fired up when they talk about politics. Stay away from negative talk. You know what tics you off, so avoid it. “Manageable stress” is best, because you can’t entirely eliminate stress from your life. Lack of stress dulls the mind and may be unhealthy.

Set time to relax. That does not only reduce stress; it also increases your efficiency. Recharge yourself by doing the things that soothe you: pausing for a few minutes to savor a cup of tea, gardening chores, walking leisurely around the block, or playing with your pet dog.

Listen to music. The part of the brain that promotes relaxation is the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). Stimulate its production of stress hormones by listening to soothing music. What usually works are self-generated sounds, like chanting.

Keep a small bottle of lavender essential oil in your purse. Each time you feel heady with your looming deadlines and you are about to explode, dab a drop of lavender oil on your neck or wrist. The smell of lavender is soothing. That is why it is a staple in aromatherapy.

Stick to a healthy diet filled with anti-stress foods. Manage stress by eating these known anti-stress foods: bananas, asparagus, nuts, blueberries, quinoa, and tuna What anti-stress foods normally have in common is that they promote serotonin production. An imbalance in serotonin levels have been linked to depression.
